Tutu weaves a dream for SA children in new book

Nobel laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was to release a children's book, titled God's Dream, today, which is also his 78th birthday.

The launch will take place at the National Library's Centre for the Book.

Independent Newspapers, Jacana Media and the Centre for the Book are asking for pledges of R50 or any donation to distribute the book to under-resourced libraries across the country. God's Dream will be available in all 11 official languages.

Tutu said he was sure that the colourful illustrations, by LeUyen Pham, would be a hit with children. Describing Pham as a "very gifteb artist", he said he believed the images of children of different races complemented the book's theme of unity and tolerance. Children from Muslim, Jewish, Christian and other religious backgrounds are pictured praying together.

"I hope it will awaken a sense of hope, that we belong. There is no "us" and "them" we belong together.

Pham has given Tutu an early birthday present: her image of a rainbow weaving together children of all races, along with their pets. The picture is featured in the book.

Although the book was aimed at children, Tutu said the message was one that spoke to South Africans of all ages.

"The elders can read with the children and share the message as a family."

Tut, who served as the Anglican Archibishop of Cape Town from 1986 until 1996 has long been a champion of forgiveness. This was most evident when he chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Tutu co-wrote the colourful book with Douglas Cartlon Abrams.

The pair also wrote the 2005 book God has a Dream: A Vision of Hope for Our Time.

Independent Newspapers appeals to readers, clients and corporate business to take part in the initiative by depositing donations to the account name Argus Teach Fund, account number 070520852, Standard Bank, Cape Town, branch code:020009.
